Space-Saving AHU Designed for Multifamily Buildings

SPACE SAVER: Midea's new Pancake Air Handling Unit is available in four capacities between 18,000 Btu and 36,000 Btu and can be matched with a range of outdoor heat-pump units.

May 1, 2026

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Midea is highlighting its new inverter-driven Pancake Air Handling Unit (AHU) as an easy-to-install, in-the-ceiling ducted solution that brings cold-climate heat pump performance into a category dominated by fixed-speed systems.

As one of the few inverter-driven “pancake” AHUs available, the Midea system is designed to deliver stable, high-performance heating and cooling in a range of ambient temperatures, a Midea press release said. The Pancake AHU is available in four capacities: 18,000 Btu, 24,000 Btu, 30,000 Btu, and 36,000 Btu, supporting a broad range of configurations.

The Midea Pancake AHU is one of the few in-ceiling systems that combines inverter technology and enhanced vapor injection to support strong cold-climate operation, allowing designers and developers to transition from fixed-speed operation to more energy-efficient, inverter-driven control, the press release said.

The system pairs with Midea’s inverter-driven heat pump systems to deliver variable-speed heating and cooling, including up to 100% heating output at -4˚°F and continuous operation down to -22˚°F.

The Pancake AHU also supports backup heating capacity for added confidence for cold-climate applications.

Key performance benefits, according to the press release, include:

• reliable heating performance in cold climates with inverter-driven operation

• less reliance on electric resistance heating under normal conditions

• consistent airflow and precise temperature control

• high-efficiency operation that helps reduce energy consumption and operating costs

The Pancake AHU is designed to simplify installation and integration in both new construction and retrofit projects. The system works within the infrastructure of existing buildings without requiring major system redesigns, the press release said.

Installation and integration features, the press release said, include:

• compatibility with standard 24V and RS-485 controls

• integration with a range of third-party outdoor units

• support for ducted distribution across multiple rooms from a single unit

• output of up to 899 cfm to support longer duct runs and complex layouts

This flexibility allows specifying engineers to incorporate the system into a wide range of multifamily applications while reducing installation complexity and project disruption.

The Pancake AHU is engineered for early-stage specification and ideal for multifamily buildings, the press release said. The ultra-low-profile design helps accommodate ceiling space constraints and existing building systems, including ductwork and fire protection layouts, the press release said. This configuration also eliminates the need for a dedicated mechanical closet and keeps equipment concealed from primary living areas.

“When designing for multifamily, every square foot matters,” said David Rames, senior specialist — product promotion and development, Midea Residential Air Conditioning. “The Midea Pancake AHU gives designers and developers more flexibility in how they design their units. The ability to move a high-performing AHU into the ceiling instead of a closet makes for extra usable space that can ultimately drive more value for the project.”

When installed, the Pancake AHU can be accessed through a service panel, reducing maintenance time and disruption for building operators, the press release said.

For multifamily developers, the system supports efficient unit layouts without increasing the building footprint. Dual-voltage capability (115V or 208/230V) can further savings costs by allowing the indoor unit to operate on 115V power, reducing electrical infrastructure requirements.

Improved comfort, reduced noise, and consistent performance can also contribute to stronger tenant satisfaction and fewer operational concerns for property owners, the press release said.
