Nearly 25% of people in the construction workforce are older than 55, according to a white paper by the National Center for Construction Education & Research (NCCER) and Pearson, Ancora Education partners that craft the training curriculum and credentialing needs for trades programs. Retirements and other factors have led to a shortage of qualified trades professionals.

“We are excited to support this initiative by building learning solutions that empower students at Miller-Motte College with the skills and confidence to thrive in careers in the skilled trades,” said Andrew Dunaway, product manager for career-connected learning at Pearson, in an MMC press release. “This partnership is a testament to our shared mission of bridging the skills gap and driving economic growth in communities nationwide.”

Miller-Motte’s HVAC/BR classes combine theory with the practical application of job skills. Shop courses include the use of hand and specialty tools and emphasize equipment and safety procedures, as well as customer service skills, educating students to tackle real-world challenges upon graduation, the press release said. Upon program completion, HVAC/BR graduates will have had the opportunity to earn up to five NCCER industry-recognized achievement certificates that never expire. They will also be prepared to test for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Section 608 technician certification, a vital credential for HVACR professionals.

The HVAC/BR program topics include air-conditioning systems, electrical systems and controls, heating systems and heat pumps, refrigeration systems, customer service and business communications, and safety and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations.
