Legislation Could Expand 529 Plans to Include Trade Programs
An HVAC Minute Video Update: June 30, 2025
A newly passed provision in the U.S. House could make entering the skilled trades more accessible — and more affordable. The “One, Big, Beautiful Bill” would allow families to use 529 education savings plans to pay for career certifications, apprenticeships, and licensing programs, including those in HVACR. Traditionally used for college tuition, 529 plans are tax-advantaged accounts designed to help families save for education. If approved by the Senate, this expansion could be a major win for the skilled trades. As a result, associations like ACCA and SMACNA are encouraging contractors to start having conversations with students, parents, and schools about how 529 funds could now support technical education paths. If this provision becomes law, it could shift how an entire generation thinks about the value of skilled trades — and how they pay to get there.
