CAMBRIDGE Ohio, — John Milligan of Cambridge, Ohio, has won a grant from The Joseph Groh Foundation, which is dedicated to helping people in the contracting and construction trades who face life-altering disabilities.

Milligan, who had been an equipment operator and a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers, was left paralyzed from the waist down by a car accident in 2022. Following his recovery, he sought out housing that would allow him to be as independent as possible, building a 1,600-square-foot barndominium-style home.

The Groh Foundation made a commitment to install HVAC equipment at Milligan’s new home, supported by founder Joseph Groh’s contacts at Lennox and Thorne Plumbing, Heating & AC.

“Thanks a million for everything you all have done,” Milligan said afterward. “I appreciate you sticking with us throughout all the changes, and it was nice working with industry professionals who understood what we needed.”

The Joseph S Groh Foundation was organized in 2009 and has provided assistance totaling $1.2 million to 121 families in 34 states. Projects have ranged from wheelchair-accessible vans and home and bathroom remodeling to assistive technology, rehabilitation equipment, home repairs and more. The foundation also offers resources to individuals with disabilities through its website.

Joseph Groh, an HVAC industry veteran, was inspired to begin the foundation after an accident during a bicycle ride left him a with severe injuries.
