Jeffery GitomerCompany:GreenHomes America, Integrated Building and Construction Solutions (IBACOS)

Customer: Multiple homeowners in the Syracuse, N.Y., area.

Installation: GreenHomes America is installing two exterior insulation strategies on eight homes in addition to other deep energy retrofit strategies. Methods include closed-cell spray foam and rigid board; dense packing insulation in walls, attic, and basement; and insulation improvements. Energy recovery ventilation equipment and new high-efficiency boilers, furnaces, and domestic hot-water equipment are also being installed.

Completion: 2014

Objective: Find new or improved strategies for exterior building solutions in regard to insulation that will provide extensive energy-savings benefits for homeowners.

Work Completed: GreenHomes America completed the first phase of a deep energy retrofit program with the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) and doubled each of the four homes’ insulation R-value. Initial results show that each home significantly increased its overall comfort conditions and reduced its energy costs. In addition, a new energy recovery ventilation system ensures the right amount of healthy airflow in the home.

“This project offers a great opportunity for homeowners to be on the leading edge of the next-generation, sustainable construction. It’s really great that GreenHomes America is blazing a trail by providing opportunities for consumers to make their homes more energy efficient.”
- Duncan Prahl, senior research manager, IBACOS, and senior advisor on the NYSERDA project.
