The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) is installing “smart” real-time electricity meters for 3,400 large business customers. The metering systems will allow businesses to manage and forecast energy loads in real time, calculate bills in detail based on when they use power, and monitor energy usage via the Internet. They will also transmit outage and power usage data to LADWP’s communications center.

The meters are being supplied by Siemens Power Transmission & Distribution, Inc. (Raleigh, NC), which says that the units will reduce electricity bills by 15% and cut as much as 240 MW of electricity demand.

The project is expected to be completed by May 2002.
