MILLENNIALS AREN’T SO BAD

Just read your millennials article in the Nov. 20 edition of The NEWS. Good message and a relevant topic.

During my travels, I hear many complaints about the younger workforce, and I guess it’s all relative to one’s experience. My attitude toward millennials is similar to yours.

Back in 2010, I hired an intern from a local community college to do design work for print media and the website. He and I had good synergy despite our 37-year age difference. He needed a mentor, and I needed a young, high-tech millennial.

When his internship ended, I asked him to continue working with me. Subsequently, he started taking high-level website design courses, and he had the benefit of practical application by implementing his classroom theory to my website. In November of 2012, he moved my website from personal home page (PHP) to a simple WordPress platform, and website traffic really took off — it was the difference between night and day.

Just prior to the summer of 2013, and based on his latest website design college class, he pestered me about a complete website redesign from the ground up. At first, I was slow to agree.  It was expensive, and I thought being on WordPress was enough. I finally relented, and we never looked back. That few thousand dollar investment — not an expense — led to future website revisions; each revision catapulted my company’s internet, blog, and e-commerce activity to new heights.

The above anecdote is about synergy, regardless of generational differences. Objectivity and an open mind are key business attributes. The opportunities for generational cohabitation are available. It all depends on perspective.

THINKING OUTSIDE THE BOX

I really appreciate Randy’s latest column, “Just Another Tool in the Toolbox?” However, I almost didn’t read it. I am usually turned off by business articles containing headlines about a tool or toolbox. Redinger draws a bead on real 21st century leadership traits and provides ideas for running with them. I find that most refreshing.
