The growth of the frozen food industry has meant an increase in the number of production and storage facilities to meet consumer needs. Temperatures in frozen food production and distribution range from 50 to -50 degrees F. A test facility with a layout that represents all levels of temperatures and numerous production challenges was chosen to illustrate the refrigeration requirements in a typical production-distribution facility.
When you are replacing the various types of fan motors typically found on refrigeration systems, it is not uncommon to be unable to identify or obtain the original motor from the OEM’s part number. You may need to select a replacement motor that matches the original motor’s specifications. When you are choosing a replacement motor, it almost goes without saying that the specifications of the replacement must closely match those of the original.
Good piping practices are essential to guarantee a long life and minimal maintenance for refrigeration and freezer equipment. First off, a good system begins with a little planning.
Many service technicians often become confused when the liquid line becomes restricted in the refrigeration system. This is because the symptoms often look like an undercharge of refrigerant. This article covers a refrigeration system with a restricted liquid line after the receiver using R-134a as the refrigerant. The refrigeration system is a low temperature freezer with a receiver and a TXV.
Whitehead Institute of Genome Research is the largest DNA sequencing center in the world, and the single largest contributor to the Human Genome Project. “Our library of code samples is growing by leaps and bounds every month,” said Whitehead’s Director of Physical Plant John Shearns. “We need to be able to store and retrieve samples with increased efficiency to keep up the pace.” So, Whitehead decided to install a robotic retrieval and storage system inside a custom-made freezer.

Steve Howard takes a no-pressure approach to successful selling. But his ISH seminar was anything but low-key. The popular consultant to the HVACR trade told seminar attendees that there are big demands for HVACR products and services, but that our industry is witnessing a decline in the number of personnel to sell and service these products.
Last summer, the HVACR department at the University of Northwestern Ohio was officially accredited through the Partnership for Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Accreditation (PAHRA). According to Tom Grothous, instructor for the HVACR department, this milestone is proof positive that his program is doing what it sets out to do and what the industry requires.
