Rebate programs associated with the Inflation Reduction Act for the purchase of high-efficiency HVAC equipment are finally picking up steam, after a near year and a half since the IRA was signed into law. On January 17, the Department of Energy (DOE) announced that New Mexico, Hawaii, California, and New York were the first to apply for funding for High-Efficiency Electric Home Rebates (HEEHR), for low- and moderate-income households. These direct-to-homeowner payments for the purchase of qualifying high-efficiency HVAC appliances include up to $8,000 for a heat pump. Additionally, HEEHR provides rebates for electrical work that some homes may need to accommodate these appliances, such as panel upgrades. HEEHR is one of two HVAC-related IRA rebate programs. Home Owner Managing Energy Savings (HOMES), is the other. HOMES, open to homeowners at all income levels, is for the installation of certain high-efficiency equipment and additionally, other home improvements such as insulation, which demonstrate energy savings.
