Tech of the Month — May 2021: Zachary Grosh of Butler Heating and Air Conditioning

Grosh is recognized as technician of May 2021

Tech of the Month: Zachary Grosh of Butler Heating and Air Conditioning.
May 6, 2021

Name: Zachary Grosh

Title: Service Manager at Butler Heating and Air Conditioning in Dayton, Ohio

Why He’s Tech of the Month: Zachary Grosh started in the HVAC business 10 years ago, after graduating from high school. Grosh planned to work in HVAC until he figured out what he really wanted to do. It turned out that what he really wanted to do was work in HVAC.

“I like working with my hands,” said. “I like working with people. I take a lot of pride in what I do.”

It helps that after a few years, he went to work at Butler Heating and Air Conditioning in Dayton, Ohio, working under then-owner Steve Scothorn. Grosh describes himself in those days as someone completely lacking in confidence who was always down on himself. Scothorn changed that.

“He built confidence up in me that I didn’t realize I had,” Grosh said.

Scotthorn eventually sold the business to Chris Bermick and Nick Lamb. Grosh is now their service manager, and he’s working to instill the virtues he learned into a group of young technicians.

“I’m trying to build a service department with the kind of values that I expect,” Grosh said.

That sometimes means going beyond what is expected. Lamb shares the story of how Grosh would perform service work on his own time for an elderly woman who recently lost her husband. After learning of the woman’s situation, Grosh came to Lamb and asked for permission to do the work at no charge. He would stop on his way home from work and service her system.

“This scenario not only shows Zachary’s heart for the customer, but also his integrity to his employer,” Lamb said. “Zachary is the kind of technician who represents all technicians in our industry well.”

Lamb said Grosh is always upfront with his customers, even when that means having a difficult conversation. He always offers the best solution and guarantees it will be done in the right way, Lamb said. That gets back to the pride Grosh expressed. He said one of the best parts of HVAC work for him is being able to finish and look at a job well done.
