RAM-5-ID Chiller Tube Cleaner

The Gold award in the HVAC Commercial Equipment category goes to the RAM-5-ID Chiller Tube Cleaner from Goodway Technologies. This tube cleaner takes high-speed tube cleaning to new levels and is designed for contractors and facility managers with large tube bundles.

“The RAM-5-ID Speed-Feed tube cleaner is a game-changer for contractors and facility managers with large tube bundles,” said Tim Kane, president and CEO of Goodway Technologies. “Its unique features and innovative design help clean large volumes of smooth bore or enhanced tubes quickly and effectively.”

The secret is in the Speed-Feed technology, which uses a gun-type system to automate the insertion and retrieval of the cleaning shaft into the tubes, making the tube cleaning process faster and more efficient. Plus, a dial-in brush rotation feature allows the operator to achieve the perfect rotation for cleaning enhanced tubes, ensuring a thorough and effective cleaning every time.

In addition to the Speed-Feed technology, the RAM-5-ID tube cleaning system features an intuitive design. As Kane explained, tube cleaning, or “punching tubes,” is often left to newer technicians or apprentices, making ease of use a top priority for customer satisfaction. The RAM-5-ID is designed with a single operator in mind, requiring minimal training for efficient use.

Portability is also an important feature of the system, as its enhanced industrial design includes larger wheels, better balance, and longer dollies to make the RAM-5-ID easier to transport, store, and move. These features are especially beneficial for technicians who work in chiller rooms of varying sizes and scales.

Goodway Technologies spent 18 months designing the RAM-5-ID model, focusing on consumer research, which consisted of primary and secondary research to develop and outline the feature sets.

“We conducted quantitative research, which examined the pros and cons of existing solutions,” said Kane. “Qualitative research also took place with one-on-one discussions with contractors and facility engineers to help understand challenges and potential opportunities. Throughout the design process, there were multiple test points to evaluate the effectiveness and ensure the result was a high-quality solution for our customers.”

One of those customers is Paul Loughran, chief engineer at Riverbay Corp.’s Co-Op City power plant in Bronx, New York. He uses the RAM-5-ID for all of the co-op’s heat exchangers as well as its 6,000-ton chiller units, which consist of a condenser, evaporator, and surface condenser.

“I like the fact that it cleans tubes with two passes — the first when it goes forward into the tube and second when it is retracted back through the tube,” said Loughran. “I also like that it is less labor intensive and that the unit is self-contained. Being self-contained means the techs doing the job can concentrate on the cleaning and not worry about losing parts. This tube cleaner also improves our profitability, as it requires less manpower, decreases the amount of time spent on the job, and reduces the time that the equipment is out of service.”

The RAM-5-ID Chiller Tube Cleaner is assembled in the U.S. and offers exceptional components and quality, said Kane.

“Goodway pioneered mechanical tube cleaning systems, and the RAM-5-ID tube cleaning system is the latest evolution to that line of innovative heritage.”

Resolute 30-ton Packaged System

The Silver award goes to Rheem’s Resolute 30-ton packaged system, which features field-convertible airflow (downflow and horizontal) with standard single-zone and multizone VAV. Engineered to deliver efficiency and performance, this system exceeds DOE 2023 efficiency requirements with up to 11% higher IEER compared to base efficiency.

The Resolute 30-ton packaged system offers zoning capabilities and five stages of cooling to enhance occupant comfort, while the field-convertible airflow allows unit placement that fits the needs of the application. PlusOne diagnostics include CoreCommand Control, which delivers enhanced diagnostics with easy-to-understand fault codes, complete fault history, and input/output options to meet building compliance needs. The CoreCommand board features easy-to-use buttons for scrolling through fault code history and an LED screen for easier and faster diagnostics.

“Contractors will love the hinged access panels, single-point wiring, factory-programmed VFD [variable frequency drive], and slide-out assemblies that all come standard and make installation and service easier,” said Rosa Leal, director of commercial product strategy and customer experience at Rheem. “For extra flexibility, Resolute units can include ClearControl, which enables easy communication via BACnet, LonWorks, or Modbus.”

Building owners will appreciate the reliability-boosting features, such as the phase monitor protection, condensate overflow sensor, and VFD — also standard features on this unit, added Leal. A stainless steel heat exchanger option is offered on the gas/electric unit, which provides extra peace of mind with longer limited warranty terms.

In designing this system, Rheem conducted focus groups and convened a Product Excellence Panel, which included contractors, distributors, and engineers in the field.

“Designed with the future in mind and relying on nearly 100 years of bringing high-quality, reliable HVAC products to the market, Rheem Resolute units include the right mix of premium options to enhance comfort, installability, serviceability, and reliability,” said Leal.
