The HVACR industry is undergoing another transition as federal and state regulations are being enacted that will phase down the use of HFCs in air conditioning and refrigeration equipment in the U.S. Unlike the last transition, which phased out refrigerants with high ozone depletion potential (ODP) such as R-22, this transition concerns the phasedown of high-GWP HFC refrigerants, such as R-410A and R-404A.
In response to these regulations, manufacturers have created a number of low-GWP solutions that are designed to have similar — or better — efficiencies and capacities than the refrigerants they are intended to replace. Those listed here are just a few that are currently available.
