WILMINGTON, Del. — DuPont Tate & Lyle Bio Products has collaborated with Skyline Innovations Inc. to launch the company’s first solar thermal installation using a heat transfer fluid based on Susterra® 1,3-propanediol, a bio-based glycol which can improve energy efficiency and reduce maintenance costs.

Susterra is certified 100 percent bio-based by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, making it attractive for companies seeking to add renewable content to their products. DuPont Tate & Lyle said a peer reviewed life cycle assessment demonstrates that the production of bio-based propanediol offers significant environmental benefits including up to 40 percent less greenhouse gas emissions and 40 percent less non-renewable energy used in production versus petroleum-based glycols.

Skyline Innovations is a leader in the development and financing of commercial-scale solar thermal systems. For Skyline’s glycol-based thermal systems, the heat transfer fluid circulates between the solar heating collectors and storage tank and has the advantage of freeze protection in colder climates.

“DuPont Tate & Lyle is pleased to offer Skyline Innovations a renewable glycol that will improve system performance, and we will continue to collaborate with Skyline to expand the adoption of solar thermal technologies.” said Lirys Cullinan, market development manager for DuPont Tate & Lyle.

“Skyline is always looking for new products and practices to increase system efficiency and reduce costs. This collaboration with DuPont Tate & Lyle advances Skyline’s mission to better provide more affordable clean energy options to commercial properties, multifamily housing, and small businesses,” said Brian Gottlieb, Skyline Innovations COO.
