UL Unveils Gas-Fired Listing Mark

ATLANTIC CITY, NJ — Underwriters Laboratories Inc. (UL) launched a new Gas-Fired Listing Mark at a press conference at the 2002 International Air-Conditioning, Heating, Refrigerating Exposition (AHR Expo) here.

The new mark was developed to demonstrate to consumers, distributors, and regulatory authorities that gas-fired products so marked have been evaluated to nationally recognized standards relating to both gas and electrical safety.

Featuring the widely recognized UL within a circle with the words “GAS-FIRED” above and “LISTED” below, the mark indicates that a product has been tested to U.S. and Canadian standards, such as ANSI Z21/Z83, for residential, commercial, and industrial products. It replaces UL’s previous Classification Mark for gas-fired products.

Dan Restelli, UL program leader for the Gas-Fired Listing Mark, noted that most people associate his organization with electrical safety. “We wanted a mark to distinguish gas appliances.”

A Canadian version of the mark will be available, Restelli said, as well as a combination U.S. and Canadian mark for products that meet both nations’ standards.

The new mark can be applied to products in more than 30 categories, including furnaces, boilers, space heaters, water heaters, gas fireplaces, barbecue grills, commercial food service equipment, and others.

Restelli also noted that, during 2001, UL put together a new Heating, Cooling, Ventilation and Cooking Equipment Directory that includes all listed gas-fired equipment.

UL hopes to have implementation dates for the mark within three months and to implement it within a year.
