Project Files: Smarter School

COMPANY: Shaw Mechanical Services LLC (Orlando, Fla.)

INSTALLATION: Trane air-cooled chillers, climate changers, and VAV boxes; Patterson pumps; and an Alerton BacNet digital controls system

COMPLETION: August 2011

CUSTOMER: Orange County Public Schools

OBJECTIVE: To completely renovate the air conditioning, heating, and chilled water piping system in 7 weeks.

DESCRIPTION: The Southwood Elementary School campus in Orlando needed a complete HVAC renovation - and the work had to be completed during a seven-week summer shutdown. Shaw Mechanical Services LLC, through a subcontract agreement with Wharton-Smith Construction Co., worked on the $1.3-million project for Orange County Public Schools. The renovated HVAC system was designed by SGM Engineering Inc., and required Shaw to install two Trane air-cooled helical rotary chillers, 66 Trane Variable Air Volume boxes, 15 Trane Performance Climate Changers, five Trane ductless split systems, 17 Trane variable speed drives, and five Patterson Primary/Secondary pumps. The Southwood campus consists of four classroom buildings: the administration/media building, kitchen/cafeteria building, pump building, and central energy plant. Now each building has multiple air handling units in addition to VAV systems and a chilled water piping loop. The project also included a complete new Alerton BacNet digital controls system, which provides offsite monitoring, adjustments, and alarms.

“This project will be home to hundreds of elementary school children at the start of the 2011 school year...”
- Steve Hamilton, project manager, Shaw Mechanical Services
