Oil Heat Cares Contributes Boiler

EAST PETERSBURG, Pa. - The National Association of Oil Heating Service Managers’ (NAOHSM’s) Oil Heat Cares program continues to operate across the nation. Bob Murphy, a retired homeowner in Greenfield, Mass., was the recent recipient of a new Weil-McLain steam boiler.

“I am so fortunate,” said Murphy as his new equipment was being installed by a regional contractor and high school students from the Franklin County Technical School in Turners Falls, Mass.

After hearing of the Oil Heat Cares program, Murphy sent a letter of interest to George Milton, service manager of Mackin Construction and Fuel in Greenfield, Mass. He knew that he needed a new boiler, but his financial situation was such that he couldn’t afford to replace his old one. The plumbing and HVAC students at the Franklin County Technical School partnered with Mackin on the initiative.

“It was a perfect way for us to end the year with the students,” pointed out HVAC instructor, John Hicks. “For them to see success just as it is in the field was very valuable.”

Additionally, Mackin provided technicians to safely remove the old boiler and hoist in the new Weil-McLain boiler and indirect water heater. Upgraded piping and setup was done jointly by Mackin’s contracted plumber and the students. Jobs like this take place often and Oil Heat Cares awards its chapters annually for their hard work and dedication. The 2008 Oil Heat Cares Cup was awarded to three chapters this year - Garden State, Rhode Island, and New York City. The cup was presented to the three winning chapters at the NAOHSM 2008 Convention in Hartford, Conn.
