EMCOR to Overhaul D.C. Steam Tunnel System

NORWALK, Conn. - EMCOR Group Inc., a leading mechanical and electrical construction, energy infrastructure, and facilities services firm, has announced that its EMCOR Government Services business will perform a major overhaul of a seven mile steam tunnel in Washington, D.C., that serves more than 100 government buildings.

EMCOR Government Services will perform a range of integral services relating to the tunnel including designing, fabricating, and installing 75 ventilation fans and required steel support structures, repairing the concrete walls and ceiling, verifying ventilation airflow and compliance with noise abatement standards, excavating and replacing 80 feet of steam supply and condensate return line, and inspecting, maintaining, and providing housekeeping services for the steam distribution complex. The tunnel provides steam to over 55 million square feet of buildings that include the Department of State, the Reagan Building, and the Government Services Administration headquarters, as well as the area’s major monuments and museums.

“The federal government is one of our most important clients in the D.C. area, and this project is yet another example of the comprehensive and complex services we provide for the infrastructure and systems that our services support,” said Michael Shelton, president of EMCOR Government Services.
