Senator h. c. Peter Schaufler, CEO and owner of Bitzer, has passed away at the age of 74. Schaufler managed Bitzer for 36 years and turned the company into the world’s largest independent manufacturer of refrigeration compressors.
Tecumseh Products Co., a leading manufacturer of refrigeration and air conditioning compressors, announced that it has entered into a definitive merger agreement under which an affiliate of Mueller Industries Inc. and Atlas Holdings LLC will acquire Tecumseh in a transaction valued at approximately $123 million.
Bob and Tim were at a retail store where the manager had called and said there was no cooling. The system was a 5-ton heat pump. After talking to the manager, Bob and Tim turned the thermostat to the “fan on” position to see if there was power to the unit and the indoor fan started. The heat pump was a split system, so they went up to the roof.
If refrigerant migration occurs in a system that has a crankcase heater, the vapor will be forced away from the crankcase and end up in the suction line. This refrigerant may condense in the suction line and cause slugging in the compressor’s cylinders on startup.
Thinking in temperature in-stead of pressure can help make the crossover to a new refrigerant much easier. The next time you’re faced with determining the correct operating evaporator or condensing pressure, think in terms of temperature and then convert it to pressure.
