California State University (CSU) has entered into the third phase of an agreement that significantly cuts the system’s dependence on grid power. Projects at 21 CSU campus locations and the Chancellor’s Office are under consideration for an agreement that would add nearly 13 megawatts of solar capacity.

Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market has opened the first grocery store in Southern California to use carbon dioxide (CO2) refrigeration. The store, located in Rosemead, is Fresh & Easy’s first to be GreenChill certified and is among four new stores that the company opened, including the 100th in California.

Butte College, a 21,000-student community college in Northern California, has announced its intent to become the first U.S. “grid-positive” college. Administrators plan to produce more electricity by solar power than the school consumes by adding approximately 15,000 solar photovoltaic (PV) panels by May 2011.
