TAC Updates Voluntary Recall
LOVES PARK, Ill. - TAC Field Devices has updated its voluntary recall of TAC Erie BB2400 boiler operating controls and BB1200 boiler reset controls, started in conjunction with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission in Jan. 2007. Since then, more than half of the approximately 850 units, all manufactured in either Loves Park, Ill., or in Lewiston, Maine, have been recovered.
The controls were sold by TAC wholesalers, independent field offices, and original equipment manufacturers nationwide. The controls for the 2400 model were sold from Feb. 1998 through June 2005, and the controls for the 1200 model were sold from July 1999 through Nov. 2006.
The boiler controls can fail, causing water temperature to rise to the high temperature limit. Failures will cause the water temperature of the unit to be controlled by the high-limit thermostat, thus causing the unit to continuously cycle at the high limit. The failure of the BB1200 will call for permanent boiler activation resulting in system temperature rise and will only be limited by external safety devices.
Should the high temperature thermostat or external safety limit devices also fail, consumers could suffer scalds from unexpectedly hot water during use or system-piping damage could occur. TAC is aware of 17 incidents where the boiler control reportedly failed. One incident of system pipe damage has been reported. No injuries have been reported. The control is in an enclosure mounted on or near the boiler. The recalled controls have a nameplate on the front of the enclosure with the system name and model number. A numerical LED display will be part of the nameplate.
Affected BB2400 carton labels on uninstalled products will have date codes prior to 0523. Affected BB1200 carton labels on uninstalled controls will have date codes prior to 0647. No date code is stamped on installed products.
TAC is asking its distributors and reps to locate, inspect, and identify products in their inventory. Products affected by this notice will be returned to TAC. The distributors have also been asked to prominently display a copy of TAC’s Product Safety Notice in their walk-up counter areas and provide TAC with a list of customers who may have purchased these products. TAC is attempting to notify customers directly. Contractors should contact TAC to receive instructions on how to participate in the recall and obtain a free replacement control.
