Penn State Recognized for Joining Energy Star Initiative

STATE COLLEGE, PA — Pennsylvania’s Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) Secretary David E. Hess recently joined with U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region III Administrator Donald S. Welsh to recognize Pennsylvania State University for becoming a partner in EPA’s Energy Star building initiative.

Hess said, “Penn State is setting an example by agreeing to measure, track, and benchmark its energy performance as an Energy Star partner. In addition, the university will develop and implement a plan to improve energy performance for its facilities and operations.”

“Penn State University is committed to energy conservation as demonstrated by its vast research programs and our focus on this issue in daily operations,” said Graham B. Spanier, president of the university. “The Penn State Environmental Consortium, the Energy Institute, the Office of Physical Plant, and many of our colleges are deeply involved in these energy-saving projects and research.”

Hess also noted that there are some easy ways for everyone to cut back on their energy use and prevent pollution.

“Simple changes in our daily routines can save money and improve our environment,” Hess remarked. “Everyone can do their part just by turning out the lights when you leave a room, or switching to a reduced-flow showerhead to save water.”
