WASHINGTON - Ten U.S. companies and institutions have been recognized for exemplary combined heat and power (CHP) projects by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). The organizations were recognized at the 6th Annual National CHP Roadmap Workshop.

Each of the 13 recognized projects meet EPA criteria for efficiency and fuel savings, and make outstanding contributions to reducing greenhouse gas emissions from energy generation, says EPA. The projects represent annual savings of over 2.2 million metric tons of carbon equivalent, which is comparable to removing the annual greenhouse gas emissions of 366,000 cars.

EPA's CHP Partnership is a voluntary program that supports energy users, industry, state and local governments, and other stakeholders in developing projects that offer energy, environmental, and economic benefits through the application of combined heat and power technologies.

Winners of EPA's 2005 Energy Star CHP Awards include:

Weyerhaeuser Co. for its Hawesville project, Hawesville, Ky.

Middlebury College for its campus project, Middlebury, Vt.

Cinergy Solutions and BP Global Power for BP's refinery in Texas City, Texas

American DG New York and Rego Park Nursing Home for the Rego Park project, Flushing, N.Y.

Arrow Linen for its project, Brooklyn, N.Y.

Bay Park Associates for its Sea Rise I and II apartment buildings, Brooklyn, N.Y.

American DG New York and Hermany Farms Dairy for the Hermany Farms project, Bronx, N.Y.

American DG New York and Greenpark Care Center for the Greenpark project, Brooklyn, N.Y.

Organizations receiving certificates of recognition for their leadership in implementing CHP include:

Waldbaums (A&P) Supermarket, for its project in Hauppauge, N.Y.

4C Foods for its project in Brooklyn, N.Y.

10 West 66th Street Corp., a property management company, for its project, New York

Holliswood Care Center for the Holliswood project, Hollis, N.Y.

The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) provided support for nine of the projects including: Rego Park Nursing Home, Arrow Linen, 4C Foods, Sea Rise I and II, 10 West 66th Street, Hermany Farms Dairy, Holliswood Care Center, Greenpark Care Center, and Waldbaums (A&P) Supermarket.
