As part of a renovation plan, Florida State College at Jacksonville researched a number of upgrade scenarios for its chiller plant. Initial recommendations for a conventional chiller failed to meet budget and energy-savings requirements. During the re-evaluation process, the college team visited Flagler College to see a chiller actually using the compressors.

Energy, efficiency, and economics were the key topics at the 13th Danfoss EnVisioneering Symposium held in Washington, D.C., recently at the Russell Senate Office Building. Ingersoll-Rand plc has awarded $150,000 to Purdue University to sponsor its team’s bid in the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Solar Decathlon 2011. The company said the underwriting of Purdue’s entry illustrates the contribution that solar energy and state-of the-art technology bring in creating environmentally responsible residential homes.

As tax credits for geothermal units continue, while tax credits for other HVAC equipment ended Dec. 31, 2010, interest in geothermal from both contractors and customers has heated up. Two refrigeration equipment manufacturers have received recognition for their energy efficiency efforts: Scotsman Ice Systems and Freeaire Refrigeration.

Servidyne Inc. announced that it is has been awarded contracts to provide energy efficiency and demand response services for commercial and institutional buildings in the city of San Antonio. The contracts call for the company to provide retro-commissioning and energy audit services. Servidyne also will perform demand response audits.

The theme of the 22nd annual North American Energy Efficiency Forum was “Energy Efficiency: The Smart Path to Energy Security and Economic Growth” and speakers addressed the importance of pursuing energy efficiency and alternative energy sources not only to reduce energy costs but also enhance national security.

Good news: The customers of HVAC contractors who install qualifying sustainable energy systems (geothermal heat pumps, solar water heaters, solar panels, wind energy systems, and fuel cells), will continue to receive tax credits through Dec. 31, 2016. These can total 30 percent of the installed costs (product and installation) of the systems.
