DENVER — According to the Colorado Governor’s Office of Energy Management and Conservation (OEMC), Denver’s Washington Park Fire Station will be powered by a proton exchange member (PEM) fuel cell system.

The fuel cell will be provided by Plug Power Inc. and will be fueled by natural gas. The technology will provide a portion of the facility with electricity and heat.

After one year, Plug Power will replace the fuel cell with a future production model. It is reported that Alpha Technologies installed the fuel cell and will be responsible for its operation for the project’s duration.

“The Denver Fire Department is thrilled to have the fuel cell,” said Larry Trujello, assistant chief of the Denver Fire Department. “Reliable power is essential for the public’s safety and the fuel cell may better help us to serve and meet the needs of our community.”
