Try to Get the Public Into Expo

[Editor’s note: This letter is in response to Mark Skaer’s blog “Skaer-Tactics: What am I Missing Here?” Dec. 1.]

Your proposal to the Air-Conditioning, Heating, Refrigerating Exposition (AHR Expo) under the conditions stated in your article was appropriate, but I surmise unexpected. As a follow-up to reintroduce your proposal, please allow me to suggest a possible approach: If you are able to identify all of the members, send each an individual letter or e-mail requesting how they voted and the reasons for their vote. Additionally, document why you think it is a good idea. Also indicate that they not need provide their identification on their response.

Maybe by now they have given your proposal more thought. If not, your follow-up might create further reflection. Don’t just drop your idea. Never give up.

13 SEER Mandate Is Causing an Increase in Energy Use

Here in North Texas, far too many HVAC systems are being repaired and not replaced, mainly due to the 13 SEER baseline change. Thirteen SEER and above is perceived as too expensive by the consumer.

Many 10 and 12 SEER systems, whose efficiency dramatically diminishes as they age, are being pieced back together for “one more season.” The result is increased electrical consumption.

The 13 SEER mandate has backfired. It is increasing electrical demand because systems that should not be repaired are being repaired. I expect this problem to become much worse in 2009. Consumers who have the money to replace their system will not because they have been brainwashed by the media that the economic sky is falling. Consumers who do not have the money will repair or go without altogether.

A 14 SEER mandate will only exacerbate an already open wound. Will the HVAC industry survive another bump in baseline efficiency? I hope I don’t live to see it.
