The right attitude and a willingness to learn can make tough jobs easier

There are times when determining the cause of a system problem can be quite difficult. Those are the times when a “master” technician will shine above the others. There are many qualities that allow technicians to be very good troubleshooters. One of these qualities is the attitude they take to the job and how they approach looking for the problem.
Carbon dioxide (CO2) as a refrigerant is gaining increasing industry acceptance in commercial and industrial refrigeration systems in North America, according to a survey conducted by Danfoss. The survey also identified barriers to greater CO2 use in refrigeration.
Researchers must look beyond nonflammable chemicals

NIST’s study, entitled “Limited options for low-global warming potential [GWP] refrigerants,” focused on residential and small-commercial single-package and split air conditioning systems, but the authors said their conclusions also generally apply to room air conditioning units and other refrigeration and heat-pump systems currently using common, ozone-depleting refrigerants such as R-410A or R-22, which are still used in some developing countries today. “The takeaway is there is no perfect, easy replacement for current refrigerants,” NIST chemical engineer Mark McLinden said.
The easybend kit consists of four color-coded, industrial-grade, solid, polyethylene mandrel diameters. It is 13 feet long and fits quickly, but snugly, into soft copper lineset tubing sizes of ¼-, 3/8-, ½-, and 5/8-inch.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has not given any indication that it will target R-410A in residential applications, and under the Trump administration, the agency may perhaps be less aggressive than it was under the Obama administration and, therefore, less likely to push for additional refrigerant phasedowns.
Single phasing often occurs in an electric motor when one pair of points on its power contactor fails because of the destructive arcing that takes place each time these points open or close. This arc suppressor is designed for AC power applications that operate between 110-480 V and have a maximum allowable current of 235 A (rms).
How to identify and repair restrictions and damage in the liquid line

In last month’s article, “Inside Filter Driers,” which appeared on Page 18 of the Feb. 6 issue of The NEWS, we covered the internal construction, filtering, and drying materials within a refrigerant filter drier. This month, we’ll deal with troubleshooting, service, and replacement of the filter drier.
Not understanding how some electronic controls operate and control a system can lead to misdiagnosing a system problem and costly repairs. It is best never to assume, but rather take the time to do some research and find out exactly how they operate. Guessing is rarely good and generally will lead to a misdiagnosis and cause a tech to replace the wrong part or component.
