Sept. 19, 2003: ARI, ASHRAE Adopt Two ISO Standards

ARLINGTON, Va. — The Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration Institute (ARI) has announced that ARI and the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) have jointly adopted ISO Standard 13256-1-1998, "Water-Source Heat Pumps -Testing and Rating for Performance: Part 1 - Water-to-Air and Brine-to-Air Heat Pumps: 10/24/2001," and ISO Standard 13256-2-1998, "Water-Source Heat Pumps -Testing and Rating for Performance: Part 2 - Water-to-Water and Brine-to-Water Heat Pumps: 10/24/2001," as American National Standards.

The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) approved these standards as American National Standards following their adoption by both ARI and ASHRAE. "In jointly adopting these international standards, the two organizations again confirmed their commitment to the international harmonization of standards in the HVACR industry," said Roger Thompson, chairman of ARI’s Water-Source Heat Pump Subsection. "This completes a standards development process that began when both organizations provided the core documentation for the draft which became the just-adopted ISO standard."

ISO 13256-1-1998 serves as the basis for ARI’s Water-Source Heat Pump Certification Program. The standard establishes rating criteria and procedures for measuring and certifying water-to-air heat pump and/or brine-to-air heat pump equipment performance. In this way, products are rated on a uniform basis so that buyers and users can properly make selections for specific applications. ARI’s Water-Source Heat Pump Subsection’s certification program will be revised to incorporate the change.

In addition, references to this standard appear in an updated version of ASHRAE Standard 90.1, "Energy Efficient Design of New Buildings Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings."
