SBA Offers Funding For Establishing Drug-Free Workplace Programs

WASHINGTON, DC — The Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1998 established a Drug-Free Workplace Demonstration Program within the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA). The act allows SBA to make grants to eligible intermediaries to assist small businesses financially and technically in establishing drug-free workplace (DFWP) programs.

The act defines an eligible intermediary as an organization that:

  • Has at least two years of experience in carrying out DFWP programs;
  • Has a drug-free workplace policy in effect;
  • Is located in a state, the District of Columbia, or a territory of the United States; and
  • Has as its purpose the development of comprehensive drug-free workplace programs, or supplying drug-free workplace services, or providing other forms of assistance and services to small businesses.
The act also allows SBA to provide contracts to the Small Business Development Centers to provide information and assistance to small businesses with respect to establishing DFWP programs.
