Project Files: Urban Renewal

COMPANY: The Smith & Oby Co., Cleveland

INSTALLATION: McQuay International, Minneapolis

COMPLETION: Completed

CUSTOMER: Anthony J. Celebrezze Federal Building, Cleveland

OBJECTIVE: Renovate the 40-year-old federal building’s HVAC system.

DESCRIPTION: Designed in the 1960s as part of Cleveland’s urban renewal project, the Anthony J. Celebrezze Federal Building’s tenants complained that the fan coil units were disruptive and provided ineffectual heating and cooling. To fix this, customized units were specified for the 4,640 replacements needed, including having the piping, controls, and insulation all in one box, as well as custom cabinetry. McQuay International custom designed the fan coil units that would be installed in the evening when office workers went home.

Contractor teams from The Smith & Oby Co., Cleveland, worked four nights a week, every week, for almost a year. On each floor, four-pipe fan coil units supply zoned heating and cooling to offices on the perimeter of the building. Depending on room size, each office received four, six or eight fan coil units.

“You’ve heard of the perfect storm. The Celebrezze project could have been one, but it became the perfect project instead.”
- Jeff Klie, project manager, The Smith & Oby Co.
