Project Files: Sustainable Supermarket

COMPANY: Hill Phoenix, Conyers, Ga.

INSTALLATION: Hill Phoenix Second Nature® Medium Temperature Glycol Secondary System and Low Temperature CO2 Secondary System

COMPLETION: Completed

CUSTOMER: Hy-Vee Inc., West Des Moines, Iowa

OBJECTIVE: To build a sustainable supermarket location and reduce refrigerant charge by at least 50 percent.

DESCRIPTION: Working in partnership with Hy-Vee, Hill Phoenix outfitted the supermarket chain’s newest location, the 64,000-square-foot store in Fairfield, Iowa, with Hill Phoenix Second Nature® Technology systems to benefit the environment and have a positive impact on the products it provides to Hy-Vee customers. Hy-Vee selected the Hill Phoenix Second Nature® Medium Temperature Glycol Secondary System for the meat, seafood, and deli cases, and the Hill Phoenix Second Nature® Low Temperature CO2 Secondary System for the low temperature cases and walk-in freezers.

The Hill Phoenix systems allowed the store to reduce the total HFC refrigerant charge by 60 percent (over both systems) and provided a 14 percent reduction in leak rates over a standard DX system, saving more than 883 pounds of refrigerant per year. In addition, by incorporating the medium and low temperature refrigeration systems, the store achieved EPA GreenChill Gold-Level certification and is now one of fewer than 15 supermarkets in the country that has Gold-Level certification.
