Project Files: Center Conversion

COMPANY: Stanley Heating and Air Conditioning, Elkin, N.C.

INSTALLATION: Mitsubishi ductless split system heat pump unit, Trane packaged gas/electric rooftop unit

COMPLETION: August 2010

CUSTOMER: The Elkin Center, Elkin, N.C.

OBJECTIVE: To increase the energy efficiency of an old supermarket in the process of converting it into a workforce training center.

DESCRIPTION: For more than five years, an old grocery store stood abandoned, leaving a disheartening void at one of the busiest intersections in Elkin, N.C. To renovate the building and convert it into a workforce training center, the town, Surry County, and Surry Community College used $200,000 in Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant funds through the U.S. Department of Energy. The converted center features an energy-efficient HVAC system, better insulation, sustainable materials, and a brighter learning environment. A new entry vestibule and air lock at the main entrance to the facility reduce the amount of conditioned air lost from inside the facility. Twenty workers completed the project in just four months.

“You can use an old building, convert it in energy efficiency ways, and it’s better than new.”
- Leslie Schlender, economic development director, town of Elkin, N.C.
