Michigan Contractor Named SMACNA Contractor of the Year

LAS VEGAS - John Unger, president of U.S. Sheet Metal Inc., received the Contractor of the Year award at the Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning Contractors’ National Association’s (SMACNA’s) 64th annual convention. The award is presented annually in memory of SNIPS founder Ed Carter and his son Nick Carter, magazine publisher and editor.

“John is an example of a contractor who characterizes the word ‘volunteer,’” SMACNA President Dick Cramer said. “A devoted member of the NJAB and Labor Committee, he has never turned SMACNA down for any task that we have asked.”

“John has served as an SFUA Article X Management Panelist for more than 25 years and selflessly has accepted some tough assignments to arbitrate cases no one else would take,” Cramer noted. “In addition, he stepped up to the plate to serve as a SASMI trustee when no one else was interested.”

Unger, his long-term business partner Bruce Stockwell, who served as president of national SMACNA  in 1992-1993, and their firm U.S. Sheet Metal Inc., will celebrate 40 years in the sheet metal business and as members of SMACNA on Feb. 1, 2008.

Unger’s service to SMACNA includes membership on the Budget and Finance Committee and Multi-Service Chapter Application and Selection Committee, plus chair and vice chair of the Council of Chapter Representatives. From 1992 to 1999, he was a SMACN-IFUS Trustee, serving as secretary-treasurer in 1993 to 1994 and chair from 1994 to 1996.
