Mar. 13, 2002: Construction Put In Place Rises In January

WASHINGTON, DC — According to the U.S. Census Bureau, construction put in place during January 2002 was estimated at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $876.7 billion, 1% above the revised December 2001 rate of $864 billion. The January figure represents a 2% increase over January 2001.

New residential housing construction was at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $283.9 billion in January, 1% above the revised December estimate of $282.1 billion. Nonresidential building construction was at a rate of $191.9 billion, 2% above the revised December number of $187.7 billion.

The estimated seasonally adjusted annual rate of public construction put in place in January was $218.6 billion, 4% above the revised December estimate of $210.8 billion.
