Gargaro's World: Klein Is an Idiot

Time Magazine’s Joe Klein recently wrote a column titled “Kill Your Air Conditioner.” If you want to read this left-wing idiot’s rantings go ahead and visit and search Klein. But basically, he writes that “The unnecessary refrigeration of America has become a chronic disease” and that air conditioning is “bad for the planet.”

Klein confesses that he “loves warm weather, even when it slouches to humidity.” He also bemoans the fact that the a/c was running at a recent inn he stayed at in New England.

To quote Livia Soprano, “Well, poor you!”

The first thought that entered my mind was it is easy to lob verbal shots from up in New England. How about you hang out down in Florida during mid-August and then talk to me about not using air conditioning? Maybe we should cut off the a/c at Time Magazine’s home office and see how good company morale tracks.

I thought the liberal agenda was “If it feels good, do it.” I guess that does not stretch to include temperature. This is what is wrong with liberalism - they find something they can live without and then they begin to scream that everyone else should live without it also.

Well, they can have my air conditioning when they pry it from my comfortable, cooled, sweat-free hands.

And I know, global warming is going to fry us like eggs… blah, blah, blah. However, that is where Klein loses his point. He states that air conditioning represents only 4 percent of our energy use. Well, then how about attacking cars, planes, and the other 96 percent. He even stated that while air conditioning is bad for the planet “unfortunately, it is not as bad as I’d like it to be.” That last sentence is simply mind blowing.

Talk about no respect for the HVAC industry that brings comfort and health to millions. Hey, maybe we should ban ice cubes?

Klein is an idiot

I don't know about Klein being an idiot, but he certainly is a typical ultra-liberal who thinks in terms of Socialistic values whereas everyone should be forced by the government to do as he pleases. I notice from the Time article that there are unsubstantiated claims that people are keeping their thermostats set at 68 and 65 degrees and that people are keeping their homes colder in the summer then they do in the winter. As an HVAC professional who deals with consumer temperature needs as part of my daily job, I can say for fact that those numbers are simply concocted for the sake of supporting Klein's Socialistic agenda to force American's to adjust their thermostats to suit "his" needs and desires. Then there is the using the "energy" crisis issue to attempt to force others to adapt to his comfort level. Just another tool in the liberal's arsenal of desire to control other's way of living. Since the cold blooded Mr. Klein is more comfortable at a wamer temperature, I wonder how he would feel about having to keep his home at below 70 degrees in the winter.

Actually the right wing conservative economist Phil Gramm may be closer to the mark about Americans overuse of such luxuries as air conditioning when he railed on about Americans being spoiled brats recently. Klein doesn't know the half of it. Refrigerant gases represent at least ten percent of global warming, and, at least seventy percent of all electricity in the U.S. is generated by coal.

The biggest idiot going right now is our Republican president...Klein is also an idiot because of his view and not necessarily because he is liberal.

I wish this publication would get out of the political arena and back to the subjects at hand. If I want political news I'll watch Fox news, fair and balanced.

I like the political discussion. I realize they are not Fox News in terms of coverage, but it is interesting to find out how the HVAC industry intersects with politics.

Mr. Boyd stole all my thunder. Especially the last comment about how Mr. Klein might feel about lowering his thermostat this winter. Klein claims to like warm temperatures, I wonder how his carbon footprint will look this winter? THis might be a good follow-up story for an intelligent, aggressive, and talented young reporter.
