MoreBOSTON - The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recognized ECR International’s freewatt® microcombined heat and power (MCHP) system, and Marathon’s ecopower® MCHP system, with the 2011 Energy Star® Emerging Technology Award recently at the Northeast Sustainable Energy Association’s Building Energy Conference, in Boston.
The annual award is given to products that meet rigorous performance criteria in select categories.
According to the EPA, MCHP is an emerging technology that shows tremendous potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions; the systems enable owners to self-generate a portion of their electricity as a byproduct of heating their homes or offices. The EPA estimates a typical home in the cold climate could reduce CO2 emissions 20-30 percent with an MCHP system, by offsetting electricity purchased from the grid.
