Commercial Movement Eases Jobs

By Angela D. Harris
July 14, 2008

Movers and shakers in the commercial sector brought new ideas to the industry. Changing the way things are done and where components are located are why The NEWS is honoring the following units in the HVAC Commercial Equipment category of the fifth annual Dealer Design Awards.

Emerson Network Power’s Liebert DS™ Upflow configuration won gold for moving beyond the raised floor concept. Gasmaster Industries’ GMI 4 M Gasmaster Condensing Boiler took silver for moving the moving parts outside of the hot water boiler, and the Johnson Controls Inc. York® Engineered Systems’ Tempo Air-Cooled Scroll Chiller received a bronze award for moving up the timetable on effective installation times.

GOLD: The Liebert DS™ upflow configuration extends the application of the Liebert DS beyond the raised floor to any environment.

GOLD WINNER

The Liebert DS™ Upflow configuration, which is available in capacities from 28 to 105 kW, provides precision air conditioning and humidity control for applications that require cooling delivered from the top of the unit. The new upflow configuration extends the application of the Liebert DS beyond the raised floor to any environment. With this extension, virtually any precision cooling application can benefit from the advanced controls and variable capacity.

According to the company, the Liebert DS represents the next generation of precision cooling system with features that provide more efficient computer-grade control of room temperature, humidity, and air quality in critical facilities.

The equipment is capable of responding to changes as small as ±1°F and ±1 percent rh.

The unit features total front access, which provides space and serviceability benefits. All key components are visible and accessible from the front of the unit for easy maintenance and removal. Compressors can be removed from the front - isolated from the airstream - for easier maintenance. This accessibility also enables the unit to be placed adjacent to or in back of other equipment or against a wall or partition, saving floor space. The unit’s modular frame can be field-separated into three sections, allowing it to fit into small elevators or through other tight spaces during installation.

The Liebert DS also takes advantage of the Liebert iCOM™ control system, which provides advanced diagnostic and maintenance support and enables multiple units to communicate and work together as a system to precisely control temperature and humidity across a room. The iCOM setup wizard automatically sets up all the units in a room from a single location so the efficiency of the entire cooling system can be optimized.

The Liebert DS features a patented Paradenser condenser system, which enables units to use green refrigerants with no loss in capacity, compared to conventional refrigerants, claimed the company.

Judging contractors were pleased with the multiple options and overall packaging of the unit, noting that it was a nice product, especially for the computer and data center markets.

Multiple module options are also available for this unit including the Liebert leak detection module and the temperature and humidity recorder. The seven-day temperature and humidity recorder permits close examination of computer room environment conditions and can be used as a permanent record of the environmental control system’s operation efficiency.

SILVER: Gasmaster Industries’ GMI 4 M Gasmaster Condensing Boiler is constructed of stainless steel, and has been designed to make retrofit application installations easier for technicians.

SILVER WINNER

Gasmaster Industries’ GMI 4 M Gasmaster Condensing Boiler is a hot water boiler/water heater used for commercial and institutional applications. This high-efficiency condensing boiler is used to supply hot water at 99.8 percent efficiency. The hot-water supply can be used for space heating, domestic hot water, snow melting, heating greenhouses, and various other applications.

Made of highly durable stainless steel, this product has been designed to make retrofit application installations easier for technicians. According to the company, in some applications old equipment doesn’t even need to be removed from the boiler room. The absence of moving parts inside the boiler means there is less wear and tear on the unit. With all of the electronic parts located outside the boiler shell, the unit becomes highly accessible for service and maintenance and helps reduce service call duration. The unit doesn’t require any vibration isolators or seismic controllers due to the very few vibrations caused during equipment operation.

As for other contractor benefits, “Due to the better design of the equipment, this product is smaller in size as compared to similar products,” said the company. “Contractors can save money by eliminating the need for dismantling and removing old equipment.”

BRONZE: The Johnson Controls Inc. York® Engineered Systems’ Tempo Air-Cooled Scroll Chiller’s condenser coils can be cleaned with a pressure washer and are constructed strictly of aluminum.

BRONZE WINNER

The Johnson Controls Inc. York® Engineered Systems’ Tempo Air-Cooled Scroll Chiller is a 70 to 150 tons of refrigeration air-cooled water chiller that utilizes scroll compressors. It is designed for any facility or process application requiring chilled water between 40 and 55°F.

Multiple factors speed and enhance the installation process, including speed piping installation with factory-installed, chilled-water pump and speed wiring installation with single-point power wiring and control-voltage transformer. According to the company, the unit, which weighs 20-35 percent less than other chillers in this capacity range, helps reduce rigging costs.

“This is really a great product,” noted one judge. “It will definitely fulfill a need with regard to size and weight.”

The unit also provides im- proved system reliability with factory-installed, dual, chilled-water pumps for standby operation. The chiller condenser coils, which can be cleaned with a pressure washer, are constructed strictly of aluminum, eliminating copper-aluminum corrosion. “I especially like the cleanability of the coils,” commented another judge.

The chiller also requires 30-50 percent less refrigerant, saving service time, as well.
