ASE Offers Tips to Frustrated Consumers

WASHINGTON, DC — The Alliance to Save Energy (ASE) is offering consumers a variety of tips to fit individual needs this summer when it comes to paying energy bills. The tips range from no-cost to low-cost plans.

  • Turn off everything not in use (lights, TVs, computers).
  • Replace your four most-used 100-W incandescent bulbs with four comparable 23-W compact fluorescent bulbs to save $0.82 over three years. If all U.S. households did this, the energy saved would equal the same amount produced annually by 30 power plants, according to the alliance.
  • Ceiling and other fans provide cooling and better air circulation, so you can raise the thermostat and cut down on air conditioning costs.
  • Clean or replace air conditioning filters monthly. A professional tune-up can save on energy costs.
  • A programmable thermostat automatically coordinates indoor climates with your daily and weekend patterns, increasing home comfort and reducing energy waste.
  • Close blinds or shades on the south- and west-facing windows of the house during the day, or install shading devices.
  • Shift energy-intensive tasks, such as laundry and dishwashing, to off-peak energy demand hours to increase electricity reliability.
  • Do full loads when you use clothes washers, dryers, and dishwashers.
  • Consider making home improve-ments that will reduce monthly energy bills.
  • Insulate your attic.
  • Earn 50% returns on your investment by installing insulation and weather stripping to cut your heating and air conditioning costs.
