Apr. 18, 2002: UA Donates $15,000 To Imran Khan Fund

HOLLYWOOD, FL — When PHCC staff member Norma Khan lost her life Sept. 11, after the plane she was in was crashed into the Pentagon, she left her son, Imran, in the hands of many good friends — not the least of which are the United Association of Journeymen and Apprentices of the Plumbing and Pipe Fitting Industry (UA), and the Plumbing-Heating-Cooling Contractors-National Association (PHCC).

After losing Ms. Khan, the PHCC formed the Imran Khan Scholarship Fund, which now totals more than $120,000. It was established in memory of Ms. Khan’s service to PHCC and the industry.

Most recently, the UA donated $15,000 to the fund. UA general president Martin Maddaloni presented the check to Union-Affiliated Contractors’ (UAC) co-chair Malcolm Sweet at the recent UAC Unity Meeting here in Hollywood, FL.

Maddaloni expressed his appreciation for the support Ms. Khan provided as a key staff contact between the UA and the UAC/PHCC.

UAC executive liaison Jim Witten said Mary Garvelink, a UAC member and PHCC zone director, was instrumental in setting up the fund. “We all thought a lot of Norma, and are very pleased that Mary’s efforts to honor her were successful,” he said. “The generous UA donation to the fund is particularly gratifying to the union contractors who worked with Norma.”
