Stony Brook University, a research university with a hospital and medical school located on Long Island, N.Y., has entered into a $25 million contract with Sempra Energy Solutions. The contract includes performance contracting and energy efficiency, resulting in infrastructure replacement and a reduction in overall utility costs at the 1,200-acre campus. The project will be paid for out of the energy savings provided by the energy conservation measures implemented. Major project elements include improving airflow and outside air requirements at the health science center by installing variable-frequency drives, improving the control system, and replacing existing equipment. In addition, a new control system will help save energy through a variable chilled-water system and air volume systems in 18 buildings.
