Tri-color metal roof adds appeal to Florida shopping center

February 4, 2018

A phase II expansion of the Destin Commons shopping center in Destin, Florida, added 100,000 square feet to the 500,000-square-foot center as well as Petersen’s Snap-Clad metal roof panels.

In 2003, Petersen’s Pac-Clad roof panels were specified on the original Destin Commons development and continue to be the roofing material of choice for the high-end development, officials said.

The phase II expansion required more than 30,000 square feet of Petersen’s Snap-Clad 24-gauge, 16-inch-wide panels finished in three different colors: arcadia green, slate gray and terra cotta. The panels were fabricated at Petersen’s Acworth, Georgia, plant. Infinity Metal Systems in Lake City, Georgia, installed the panels.

“It was a good job for us. Probably one of the best we’ve done as far as workmanship,” said Ken Murray, owner of Infinity Metal Systems. “There were multiple buildings involved with various applications and complexities. We’re proud of it. There weren’t any issues or difficulties to overcome.”

Although the shopping center is located near the Gulf’s corrosive saltwater environment, officials on the project said steel was selected versus aluminum due to budget constraints. Valspar, Petersen’s partner since 1972, wrote a finish warranty on the steel application, according to Dave Landis, Petersen’s manager of technical services and field inspections based in Acworth.

Architectural design for the phase II expansion was provided by Farmington Hills, Michigan-based JPRA Architects, and Commercial Roofing Specialties in College Park, Georgia, was the Petersen distributor for the project.
