A friend of mine runs the mechanical systems group at a data center. It’s a decent job and he likes it most of the time. But, like many people, he sometimes wonders if there might be a little greener grass or new horizons to be found elsewhere. So when a local school district let it be known they were looking for an experienced HVAC guy to take care of the systems at their brand-new combined high school/middle school, he looked into it. And the interview experience was eye-opening.

Industry professionals have been placing their focus on recruiting new people to the trades – as they should. But, let’s not forget about the other half of the equation – keeping your current talent.

What a difference a year makes. Actually, things have not changed at all. Not all millennials fit the cookie-cutter mold that they’ve been lumped into. Instead, find new ways to challenge the younger generation that helps them succeed, and, in doing so, your company will succeed as well.

It’s important to prepare for role changes and always be willing to seize opportunities when they present themselves.
