Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2003: Maytag To Introduce A/C Units, Heat Pumps With R-410A

CHICAGO — Nordyne made several new product announcements at the International Air-Conditioning, Heating, Refrigerating (AHR) Expo Monday, including the introduction of the Maytag M1010 Series ultra-high efficiency air conditioners and heat pumps using R-410A refrigerant.

Rated at a seasonal energy efficiency rating (SEER) of 16, these units “will be some of the most energy efficient in the industry,” said the company.

“Customers continue to demand higher efficiency and alternative refrigerants in their HVAC systems, and these units offer both,” said Dennis Kloster, Nordyne vice president, Marketing and Sales, Residential and Light Commercial.

Nordyne plans to begin production of the new Maytag units, which will be offered in 3-, 4-, and 5-ton sizes, in the second quarter of 2003. These will be the first Maytag units available with R-410A refrigerant. In order to achieve the 16 SEER rating, Nordyne said it is using a two-stage Copeland Scroll compressor, along with new evaporative coils with a thermostatic expansion valve (TXV).

“The Scroll compressor and TXV have been successfully used in the industry, and we are confident their use in the new equipment will allow us to offer the quality that customers have come to expect from Maytag and Nordyne,” said Kloster.

Also coming down the pipeline is the first Maytag M1010 Series two-stage 80% annual fuel utilization efficiency (AFUE) furnace, expected to be out in April.

“This 80% AFUE Maytag furnace allows our dealers to offer the comfort benefits of a two-stage furnace to homeowners who may not be in the market for the highest-efficiency equipment,” said Kloster. “This is another example of Maytag responding to customer needs.”

Nordyne also noted it plans to make its Maytag M1010 Series 92%+ AFUE gas furnace available in a compact size beginning June. The compact design — the unit measures 27-3/4-inches deep by 34-5/8-inches tall and is available in three widths — is designed to allow for easier installation in enclosed spaces.

Also, Nordyne said it has designed a new encasing, called “Steel Guard,” for its Maytag M1000 split system air conditioners and heat pumps. The new encasing is designed to protect units from debris, while providing sufficient airflow for operational efficiency, said Kloster.
