Sept. 28, 2007: Expanded Room Air Cleaners Directory Covers Ozone

WASHINGTON - The Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers (AHAM) is expanding its Directory of Certified Room Air Cleaners to include information on ozone emissions. AHAM’s certification program currently tests the performance of room air cleaners in reducing tobacco smoke, dust, and pollen. AHAM’s certification program directory will provide participants the ability to indicate whether products comply with the American National Standard Institute (ANSI) and Underwriters Laboratories (UL) safety standard 867 for ozone emissions.

Compliance with the ANSI/UL 867 ozone standard will be displayed as an additional column in AHAM’s directory and will note whether each model meets UL’s 50 ppb maximum ozone emission limit. This new feature of the AHAM Air Cleaner Certification program will appear in the November directory.

The particulate reduction performance results of more than 40 brands have been tested through AHAM’s Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR) Room Air Cleaner Certification Program for nearly 20 years. The AHAM directory will now include ozone emission information because of increased interest from the general public in ozone and air cleaners that produce ozone. Program participants will voluntarily submit ozone compliance information to AHAM for inclusion in the directory.
