ARLINGTON, Va. - A public review draft of ANSI/IIAR 2-1999, "American National Standard for Equipment, Design, and Installation of Ammonia Refrigerating Systems," has been released by the International Institute of Ammonia Refrigeration (IIAR). The proposed revision is designated as Public Review Draft # 1 BSR/IIAR 2-1999R.

The review of Public Review Draft #1 BSR/IIAR 2-1999R will conclude on Dec. 15, 2005. Comments must be received by IIAR no later than 5:00 p.m. EST on that day. Following approval by IIAR and the ANSI Board of Standards Review (BSR), the revised standard will be published with a new designation. ANSI/IIAR 2-1999 is a guide to the design, manufacture, installation, and use of ammonia mechanical refrigeration systems in industrial occupancies. The IIAR issued this standard originally as IIAR 74-2 in March 1974. ANSI approved it as an American National Standard in March 1978, and there were subsequent revisions in July 1985, December 1992, and August 1999. The current edition of the standard is ANSI/IIAR 2-1999. A canvass-approved addendum, BSR/IIAR 2-1999a, is currently pending ANSI approval.

The proposed changes to the standard include:

  • Complete reorganization to facilitate future revisions to the standard;

  • Removal of the appendix on Emergency Discharge of Ammonia Refrigerant;

  • Relocation of the material covering Ammonia Characteristics and Properties into a new index; and

  • Incorporation of canvass-approved material from Addendum a to ANSI/IIAR 2-1999.
