Obituary: McCarty and Mintz

Craig McCarty

Craig McCarty, 50, former Leamington, ON, Canada hvac contractor and father of Detroit Red Wing Darren McCarty, died Nov. 24 of complications from myeloma, a form of cancer.

McCarty had been fighting a four-year battle against the disease, which has no known cure. The cancer had forced him to sell his contracting company, but it spawned a charity to research the disease.

Mr. McCarty and son Darren formed the McCarty Cancer Foundation in 1998. Headquartered in suburban Detroit, the foundation held many charity events and fundraising drives to support research of myeloma.

The family is asking that memorials be made in the form of a donation to the McCarty Cancer Foundation, P.O. Box 32444, Detroit, MI 48232.
