New Grants Fund HVAC Innovations

ATLANTA - Through a grant from the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, & Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), students at Florida International University, Miami, are designing a new type of residential ventilator with enthalpy wheel heat recovery, which will minimize additional energy use while improving indoor air quality (IAQ).

Twenty-six grants, totaling approximately $120,000, have been awarded by ASHRAE to colleges and universities worldwide to promote the study and teaching of HVACR, encouraging undergraduate students to pursue related careers. The grants will be used to design and construct different projects throughout the coming year.

Other ASHRAE study and research projects awarded grants are: Building an experimental setup to understand the enhancement of condensation heat transfer using micro-fin tubes; designing an apparatus to test fans and diffusers; designing and building a multi-purpose heat exchanger apparatus; experimental study of pressurization and depressurization impact on stack effect; designing and constructing an HFC-407C machine cooler demonstrator in refrigeration lab; measuring heat transfer in mini-channel cold plate evaporators; thermoelectric refrigeration using nanofluid circulation heat exchangers; duct and fan design project; development of a system for testing the performance of nanofluid flow and heat transfer in a heat exchanger; constructing an integrated hybrid vapor-compression desiccant dehumidification system; designing and constructing a bench-scale ground-source heat pump testing laboratory unit; auditing energy of a university classroom/laboratory building and evaluating energy conservation measures; designing and constructing a fan-duct system for use in the mechanical engineering laboratory; designing a "biofouling-free" heat exchanger; developing an HVAC system simulator for laboratory use; demonstrating floor, radiator, and domestic water heating from solar heated water by using heat pump; designing and constructing a heat pump trainer for thermodynamics lab; designing and constructing HVAC metered elbows that reduce losses and noise through the use of turning vanes; and modifying and improving a thermodynamic system for cooling and revised cycle air conditioning.
