The project, which was finished on schedule on October 15, involved the installation of two 200-hp boilers as well as a boiler feed system for the church, which is located in the city’s historic Central West End.

To install the 8-ton boilers, Haberberger’s crew had to build a complex rigging system on top of the boiler house. The rigging consisted of W12 steel beams and 10 5-ton chain falls that were used to hoist the boilers through a narrow opening into the building.

As part of the project, Haberberger also installed boiler flues, steam piping, and controls, and handled start-up of the system.

Project manager Andy Romano commented on the teamwork that kept the project on track. “Foreman Mike Grady and the rigging crews did outstanding work on this project, as did Clay Buxton and the piping crew. They safely completed the challenging work on schedule.”

Besides coordinating the work, Haberberger had to contend with a limited amount of workspace at the site due to several events taking place at the cathedral. The company had to make sure that the area remained clean and safe for visitors at all times.

Anne Carleton, business manager for Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis, said, “Haberberger promptly completed the project for the cathedral and we are very pleased with the end result. The company kept us informed about the status of the project from start to finish.”
