Manitoba Releases Energy Report

WINNIPEG, Manitoba - The government of Manitoba has released a brief report entitled "Energy in Manitoba," which provides a snapshot of how energy is produced and used in the province. The report illustrates the province's gains in energy efficiency, its decreased reliance on non-renewable fossil fuels, and the rise in use of geothermal heat pumps. It indicates that the province is positioned to become a Canadian leader in renewable-energy production and consumption.

Some of the findings identified by the report include:

  • Energy intensity, or the amount of energy consumed per unit of activity, has fallen sharply and is projected to continue to fall.

  • Gasoline and diesel consumption will decline significantly in coming years following the introduction in 2007 of Manitoba's proposed ethanol fuel mandate and increase in biodiesel production.

  • Geothermal heat pump installations across the province have climbed significantly and are projected to continue unprecedented growth. Manitoba has the strongest supply infrastructure for geothermal heat pump technology in Canada.

  • Gross carbon dioxide emissions from energy are declining and are projected to continue to decline.
