July 12, 2010: Mayors Urge Adoption of International Green Construction Code

OKLAHOMA CITY - At its annual meeting, the U.S. Conference of Mayors passed a resolution calling on all cities to adopt the International Green Construction Code (IGCC) into their local government codes in order to save energy and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The mayors group noted that the International Code Council (ICC), American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), American Institute of Architects (AIA), American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America (IES), and U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) collaborated to launch the International Green Construction Code with code-intended ASHRAE Standard 189.1 as an optional path to compliance, to provide a strong starting point for states, localities, and other jurisdictions striving to write green building codes.

The U.S. Conference of Mayors then called on all local governments wishing to take a more holistic approach to incorporate energy efficiency in residential and commercial buildings, sustainable community planning, and healthy and safe building practices into their codes to adopt the IGCC and consider its Standard 189.1 compliance path as base code in their jurisdiction.
