BUFFALO GROVE, Ill. - Siemens Building Technologies Inc. has
announced that industry, government, and academic institutions with laboratory
operations now have access to a single-source solution for achieving total
environmental control, energy efficiency, and compliance in their facility. By
bundling environmental monitoring, control, and documentation services in a
turnkey package, Siemens said it is offering lab operators a simplified,
cost-effective, and accurate means to participate in the Laboratories for the
21st Century (Labs21®) program, co-sponsored by the U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency (EPA) and U.S. Department of Energy (DOE).
Due to the often intense, specialized ambient conditions required to accomplish the processes and procedures typically performed in a life science or high-tech lab, far more energy and water per square foot are consumed than in most commercial buildings. According to Life Science Solutions Director Diane Feliciano-Welpe, “Siemens Building Technologies is offering an experienced team of professionals in the HVAC, power generation, lighting, water processing, and related building environmental disciplines to formulate and execute a comprehensive plan of evaluation, renovation, and documentation specifically for laboratories. This strategy is aimed at helping lab operators cost-effectively comply with more stringent operating and safety requirements, as well as maintain an overall improved energy conservation record.”
Siemens approach involves the implementation of a comprehensive life cycle management approach for lab operations, based on various international standards and prevailing practices within specific industries, including pharmaceutical, biotech, semiconductor, primary metals, and chemical processing. The service is also scalable; the program’s modules can be scaled down to suit small, independent test labs or scaled up to thoroughly cover major corporate research facilities. Siemens said it can tailor the program to suit virtually any industry’s compliance requirements.
By containing energy costs while still maintaining a safe environment, enhancing system reliability, and providing the documentation required for ongoing compliance, Siemens enables lab operators to more quickly bring their entire environmental performance model into a manageable state-of-control and remain in that mode going forward. The program also proactively guides lab owners and user training to help ensure this status is maintained over the long-run.
